Bio
As a functional potter living and working in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Nell makes tableware “meant for people who love food, and love to present it well.” She strives to make pots that are elegant in design, pleasing to the hand and that function well. Nell began working as a potter in Colorado, touring the mountains in a VW van and selling her wares at craft fairs. Back in Denver, she was a founding member of Show of Hands, a co-op fine crafts gallery. When she moved East, she taught ceramics at SUNY Binghamton in New York. In the late 1980s, Nell was a resident artist at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, working within a diverse community of artists, exhibiting nationally and learning a professional studio practice. During the early 1990s, she lived in Tokyo, Japan where she taught ceramics at Seisen International School and was able to tour the famous kiln sites, exploring a pottery aesthetic that strongly influenced the pots she now makes. After moving back to Pennsylvania, she opened Milkhouse Studio in Phoenixville. Nell currently teaches at Chester Springs Studio and at Milkhouse.
