Bio
Stan studied painting and drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and with Patricia Vanaman Witt of Millville, New Jersey. His paintings are colorful, personal journeys through South Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. His intensely pigmented work is the result of handmade soft pastels applied to rough, sanded surfaces which he prepares. Stan has favored pastel as his medium because of the primal nature of using one’s hands, the feel of the paper and the serendipitous marks that are caused by the unusual shapes of the sticks. Over the years, he has most often worked outdoors from life (plein air studies), but he has begun to experiment with very large works from these studies in the studio. Currently, he maintains a studio where a marsh, farm and forest meet on the Crow Creek in Goshen, NJ. He is also a nationally known teacher, having conducted numerous workshops throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. Stan is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Maryland Pastel Society and also a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and the Cape May County Art League.
